Engaged Life
We ask vendors to publish what they charge, and we ask couples to plan from real numbers. It would be strange to do that and stay vague about our own. So here is exactly how we earn, and what it never buys.
Wedding vendors pay $60 a month to be part of our community. That is the great majority of our income and it is what funds everything a couple uses for free.
What membership buys: a profile in our directory with real pricing, six or more features a year across Instagram, Pinterest, our blog and our newsletter, and your work linked from any real wedding you were part of.
What membership does not buy: a better position, a recommendation, or a good word. We review every application, we have turned down vendors who wouldn’t share pricing in any form, and no amount of money moves anyone up a page.
If a vendor is here, it is because we would recommend them to a couple ourselves. That is the only thing we are actually selling, and it is why we are careful about who joins.
We are asked for these most weeks and the answer is always the same.
We do not take commission on any vendor a couple books. Not photographers, planners, venues, florists, travel agents, or room block services. Every profile links straight to the vendor’s own website and the couple contacts them directly. We never sit in the middle, we never route an inquiry, and we never take a cut of anything anyone books.
It means we cannot tell you a conversion number, because we genuinely do not have one. It also means everything a vendor books through us is theirs.
We do not sell placement. Not in the directory, not in a cost report, not in a real wedding. No vendor has ever paid to appear in a wedding feature and none ever will.
We do not accept affiliate offers from wedding services. We turn these down regularly, including good ones, because the moment we earn a percentage on a recommendation, that recommendation is worth nothing to the couple reading it.
Every wedding we publish shows what it actually cost, and it is free to submit and free to read.
Couples share as much as they are comfortable with. Some go line by line, some give a total only, and we respect that rather than pushing. We publish first names only when a couple prefers it, and detail photographs only when that is what they want.
Nobody pays to be in one, and nobody can. We credit and link every vendor on the team, whether or not they are a member.
The Mailroom is our shopping page, and it is the one place we earn a commission.
Brands send us things. We publish all of it, in the order it arrives, including the things that were not for us, because a list where everything is wonderful is not worth reading. We also publish what we bought with our own money, and what we have not bought yet but want.
Every item is labelled. Gifted, bought with our own money, or earns us a commission. On the item itself, not in a line at the bottom. If a link pays us nothing, it says so.
A commission costs you nothing. It comes out of the retailer’s side rather than being added to your price.
And it never decides what appears. We publish everything, unranked, so there is no choosing for the money to influence. If we ever start curating The Mailroom, we will stop taking commission, because those two things travel together.
Nothing in The Mailroom is a wedding vendor. Products only. Never people.
We occasionally work with brands on a paid feature, always at a flat fee agreed in advance, never on commission.
We only take these on with brands we would be glad to be seen beside, and everything we produce is written by us and marked clearly as a partnership. A brand cannot buy its way into the directory, a cost report, or a real wedding through one.
Couples come to us because they are tired of being sold to by things that look like advice. Vendors join us because they are tired of paying for leads that were never going to book.
Both of those only work if the money is visible. So we would rather publish it plainly and be held to it.
