Most wedding budgets have a line for the dress and nothing for what happens after you buy it. Alexandria Bolander of Alexandria Tailleur went to high school with bride Corley, so when the gown needed reshaping for the big day, the work landed with someone who cared about getting it right. Here is what that took, stitch by stitch, straight from the invoice.

It starts with the fitting notes

Every good alteration begins with pins and honest notes. Darts to bring the bodice in, a drape twisted over the top with snaps closing in the back, an American bustle for the reception, and a hem that had to wait until the shoes were chosen. The notebook page from Corley’s fitting is the whole story in one photo.

What $615 actually covered

The darts were $65. The drape was $75. The hem was $200, with another $100 for the lining hem. The bustle was $75. And the straps, sourced, made, and attached by hand, were $100. That is $615 to make a gown fit like it was sewn for her from the start.

Why straps cost what they do

One hundred dollars sounds like a lot for two straps until you watch them happen. Sourcing material that matches a finished gown, shaping straps that hold weight without pulling the neckline, and attaching them so they disappear into the original seams. It is the least visible line on the invoice and the one everyone would notice if it went wrong.

The part nobody photographs

Alexandria was not at the wedding. Most tailors never are. The work shows up anyway, in a bodice that stayed put through a full night of dancing and a bustle that survived the party. If your budget has room for one quiet upgrade, put it here.
