Luckily, an early summer heat wave broke just in time. The ceremony gathered under tall trees at Rock Creek Mansion, a venue the couple chose because it was the site of some of their first dates. Afterward, the celebration moved inside, where a canopy of greenery and hanging glass orbs floated above long farm tables set with amber goblets and gold rimmed chargers.

Above all, the most moving details honored the groom’s Turkish heritage. For instance, antique Turkish rugs, carried over by his parents when they immigrated, lined the ceremony aisle. Later in the evening, guests gathered around an authentic Turkish coffee bar where the coffee heats slowly in sand, and it was a hit all night.

Meanwhile, the personal touches kept coming. First, the bride’s adult son officiated the ceremony. Then dinner was served on four sets of inherited family china, each in a different pattern. And instead of place cards, every guest found a thank you note handwritten by the couple waiting at their seat.

Sustainability ran through every decision as well. For example, the couple chose a venue within twenty miles of most guests, a local flower farm for the florals, a low waste caterer serving a plant forward menu, and reusable dishware in place of anything disposable. In fact, there was zero single use plastic at this wedding, even the water came in boxed cartons.
